Laurie Olin also suggested in his interview with the NY Observer (click here to read it) that the project would probably take as long as 20 years to complete - if it is completed:
“It’s a great project, if it all happens,” he said. “The time calendar we are talking about is probably 20 years. People say 10 to 15, but take a look. How long does it take the market to absorb that much stuff?”
Does this mean that the 3 "temporary" surface parking lots (not to mention the uncovered railyards themselves) will also last that long? The largest of the temporary surface parking lots would be the entire block bounded by Pacific Street, Vanderbilt Avenue, Carlton Avenue and Dean Street. Click here to read our analysis of the temporary surface parking lots - and why they would blight Prospect Heights, worsen traffic, destroy historic buildings, and are not required in the first place.
Who gets to park in the proposed lots? Does any construction worker get to drive or are there permits? Obviously some cars and the construction vehicles are going to need parking, but is this just a ploy by the builders to get free parking for their entire staff? It's bad enough people in the neighborhood will have to deal with construction, why should they have to deal with extra traffic? Why can't construction workers take mass transit like the rest of us?
